I received many calls over the last few weeks regarding how the partial shutdown of the United States government affects Social Security benefits and claims. Fortunately, a full-year funding agreement for the Social Security Administration was reached prior to the shutdown and therefore the agency is not affected. Benefits are continuing to be paid and claims processed.
However, Social Security recipients and claimants with certain income and resource limits relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) face a potential problem if the shutdown continues through February. Currently, SNAP is funded through January; however, after that, the emergency fund will be used, which will not be able to fund the entire program.
If you know someone considering applying for Social Security Disability benefits, tell them to give me a call, Katelyn M. Burke, Esq., at Burke Law, PLLC.
